Playing with Pardo Clay

I couldn't wait to give Pardo Professional Clay a go when Clayaround starting stocking it. I'd heard great things about this clay from my American poly pals and was most excited about Pardo's translucent clay which is said to be the clearest yet.

We all know that the thinner the cane slice, the more translucent the cane background will become upon baking. Slicing canes is not my forte, I end up with door stops ... I could use the help.

I haven't had a lot of free time lately so I wanted to make a quick cane and was in need of a little leafiness. I used a tutorial I purchased from Eugina Topina

See how good that translucent is?! I didn't really have enough time to try a cane with a background but I'll report back on that one soon.

My first impressions of Pardo generally are good. It was reasonably firm to work with and didn't seem to pick up dirt as easily as some other brands. The best part was that I was able to get a pretty thin slice from the cane. Whoop.

New FloRaeMe Website

My eagle eyed readers will have noticed some new tabs and links appearing on my blog page.

Well after years of saying "I am going to", "one day" and "it is on my to do list", I have finally gone and done it and created

the FloRaeMe website.

Whoop whoop!

Take a trip over there and let me know what you think.

The FloRaeMe shop is opening soon....

Photography Studio

As you know, I am pretty bad at taking photographs. I am the ultimate "point and click" girl and end up cursing my camera if things don't turn out as I hope, which is most of the time.

So recently I have been working on taking better photographs. I bought a light tent for help here. This works well with a flash, but it's not so good with anything shiny as the flash reflects in the shiniest bits.

I bought some lamps and daylight bulbs and tried popping them either side of the light cube but I can't get enough light into the cube. Next I tried "coning" the lights and putting some tin foil inside to reflect all light into the cube, but that seemed to make it darker.

So I tried removing the light cube and look how that turned out...

Polymer Thinking Pebbles

I've gone back and forth with these polymer pebbles that I made a while back.

When I made them, they cracked and browned in the oven and whilst I felt it added to the effect, I never used them in anything.

I then found a use for them as a display/mount for jewellery that I wanted to photograph.

However I think with moving house last year and being given a bag of souvenir beach pebbles that I could use...

...I forgot all about my polymer pebblies.

Well, yesterday I discovered a good use for them. They make very good "thinking" pebbles. I pop them in my palms and fingertips and gently shuffle them for inspiration! I'm sure there has got to be something there for stress relief too :)

Never never...

...forget all about your baking clay and leave it in the oven too long.

The timer on my clay oven no longer works so I have to set myself a timer elsewhere but on this occasion I forgot.

Yes, this pair of fruit tartlets really have turned BLUE in places. If only I had made a blueberry pie it might have worked!

Workshop Review Article

I've been so busy working on FloRaeMe admin stuff (more about that later), I forgot to tell you all about my latest article.

It is a workshop review of the fabulous Tiaras One workshop at Spellbound Beads that I attended back in January.

You can find it in the current issue (Issue 37 April/May 2012) of Bead Magazine.

Here is a snapshot of the printed article

and here is my beautiful cat having a good read :)
