Baking Soda/Sodium Bicarbonate Cooking?

I finally had some time to do some clay recently - see my previous post on pastel goth/Halloween for the results. I cooked my polymer clay pieces in my loaf tin of baking soda/sodium bicarbonate and for the first time the soda seemed to "cook".

Has anyone had this before? 

Did my baking soda get damp?

What happened?
